Dear Friends,

Composed and Performed by John Burge

“Preludes Nos. 1-12” from Twenty-Four Preludes
Prelude and Fugue in D Major
“Preludes Nos. 13-24” from Twenty-Four Preludes

On Thursday, April 19th, 2018, for the second year in a row we are hosting a concert in our home in
support of the Music at Port Milford Summer School and Festival. Last year’s sold-out performance, with
violist Keith Hamm, clarinetist James Shields and pianist Peter Longworth, was not only an exceptionally
well-received and intimate affair, but many people also appreciated the insightful and witty remarks about
the music provided by Dr. John Burge.

John Burge, a professor at the Dan School of Drama and Music at Queen’s University, is not only a
Juno-winning composer, but also a fine pianist. For this year’s event we are thrilled that he will return to
perform and talk about his own set of Twenty-Four Preludes for solo piano. Completed in 2015 and having
a number of allusions to the music of Chopin, John Burge has already performed the entire set in Vancouver,
Calgary and Toronto and the work was recently given a glowing review in the magazine, International
Piano [Jan/Feb 2018] as, “a significant contribution to the contemporary piano repertoire.”

John Burge and his wife Nancy have been long-time supporters of Music at Port Milford and John
has been on the organization’s board of directors since 2012. In addition, for the last two years John has
auctioned off his compositional services in support of MPM through the commissioning of two movements
for the school’s string orchestra to perform. The winning bidders for these two commissions, Philip and
Patricia Knox in 2016 and Greg and Jenny Garrett in 2017, were not only thanked publicly at the concert but
also honored as the dedicatees on the score. John Burge intends to write one more movement for this project
that will then become the Music at Port Milford Suite. John has already sketched out a Fugue for the last
movement of the Suite. To add to the night’s excitement, we will have a live auction for this commission
opportunity after John plays the movement on the piano. The new work in its string orchestra scoring will be
performed in August 2018 by the MPM Student String Orchestra.

The evening will begin at 7:00 pm with a pre-concert glass of wine and ending post-concert with
coffee, tea and sweets. For this opportunity, we request that a minimum donation of $50 per person be made
to the Music at Port Milford Summer School. Donations can be made online ahead of time at the MPM
website <musicatportmilford.org> using the “Donate to Music at Port Milford Canada Incorporated” button
and adding a comment that the donation is for the Bazett-Jones House Concert, or by cheque or cash at the
door. A tax receipt will be mailed for all donations less the evening’s expenses.

We will make every attempt to accommodate all who wish to attend on a first come basis. Whether
donating online or at the door, please RSVP by April 15th, letting us know the names of attendees.
